Standard Chartered Brings Spot Bitcoin Trading to Dubai’s Institutional Market

Standard Chartered is expanding its spot cryptocurrency trading and custody services in Dubai, a move that deepens the bank’s institutional crypto footprint and signals that regulated finance is moving from experimentation to permanent infrastructure in the Middle East.

The bank said Thursday that its Dubai International Financial Centre unit would offer institutional clients direct spot trading in Bitcoin and Ethereum, alongside secure custody and settlement rails. The service is aimed at family offices, asset managers, and corporate treasurers who have been reluctant to use unregulated exchanges despite growing demand for digital asset exposure.

Dubai has emerged as one of the most aggressive jurisdictions in building a regulatory perimeter around crypto activity, combining licensing with enforcement. Standard Chartered’s expansion there contrasts with more cautious approaches in London and New York, where compliance costs and political scrutiny have slowed the rollout of similar services.

The bank’s chief executive for digital assets said the Middle East represents a “structural growth market” for institutional crypto because sovereign wealth funds and regional family offices are under pressure to allocate to new asset classes while maintaining the custody standards they expect from traditional banks. Those clients have historically avoided peer-to-peer platforms and even regulated U.S. exchanges over concerns about market structure and counterparty risk.

The expansion comes as global banks face a patchwork of crypto rules. In Europe, MiCA enforcement is tightening, while in Asia, Singapore has introduced selective restrictions on retail crypto activity. Dubai’s model—open to institutions, restrictive to retail—may prove attractive to banks that want the revenue of crypto without the regulatory heat.
