Over 100 companies and organizations signed an open letter warning that AI is rapidly lowering the barrier to sophisticated cyberattacks on critical infrastructure, with only months left to shore up defenses before threats scale broadly.
The coalition includes OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Microsoft, Amazon, Nvidia, CrowdStrike, Palo Alto Networks, Visa, and Mastercard. The letter says hospitals, water treatment systems, power utilities, and internet infrastructure face the greatest near-term risk, and that existing security practices are no longer sufficient against AI-augmented attackers.
Signatories argue that frontier AI companies, governments, and cybersecurity providers all share responsibility for the response. They call for funding defensive tools for under-resourced hospitals and local utilities, stricter standards for AI-generated code, and coordinated international action before the window for prevention closes.
The warning is backed by recent incidents in which AI-generated exploit scripts targeted U.S. water systems and industrial control platforms. Rather than treating the moment as purely a threat, the letter also frames it as an opportunity: if deployed responsibly, the same AI capabilities can help defenders detect and contain breaches faster than any human team.
