BlackRock, Coinbase Pledge $15 Million to Shield Bitcoin From Quantum Computing

BlackRock, Coinbase and Strategy are among a group of institutional crypto firms that have pledged $15 million to research and develop safeguards protecting the Bitcoin network from the long-term threat posed by quantum computing, the companies announced Wednesday.

The consortium, which also includes several mining firms and custody providers, will direct funding independently toward cryptographic research and code audits aimed at ensuring Bitcoin's underlying signature schemes remain secure even as quantum computers advance in power. The group emphasized that it will take no role in Bitcoin governance or protocol decisions, leaving any future upgrades to the open-source developer community.

Quantum computers, though still in early stages of commercial development, theoretically possess the ability to break certain encryption algorithms that secure Bitcoin transactions and wallets. While most experts believe such a threat remains years or decades away, the initiative reflects growing concern among institutional holders that long-dated risks to the network could undermine confidence in the asset.

BlackRock, which operates the largest spot Bitcoin exchange-traded fund, said the commitment was a natural extension of its fiduciary duty to protect client assets. Coinbase, the largest U.S. crypto exchange, noted that its custody division holds billions of dollars in Bitcoin on behalf of institutional clients who have asked about quantum resilience.

The funding will be disbursed over three years to academic institutions and independent security researchers. Bitcoin's price was little changed following the announcement, trading near $62,000, though analysts said the pledge could bolster the asset's credibility among risk-averse institutional investors.
