Starting October 9, unpaid Gemini users will get only Flash-Lite. The $4.99 Google AI Plus plan keeps Flash but loses Pro. The model that used to be a free sample is becoming a $20 product.
Google's support documentation says that from October 9, 2026, personal accounts on the free Gemini app will be limited to Gemini Flash-Lite, the lightest model in the current lineup. Free users can still choose among Flash-Lite, Flash, and Pro today. After the change, the model picker will offer Flash-Lite alone. Google AI Plus, at $4.99 a month, will keep Flash-Lite and Flash and drop Pro. The company said Plus subscribers will get an email with their own cutoff date, which may not be October 9. Access to Gemini Pro and a "Deep Think" advanced-reasoning option will sit on Google AI Pro at $19.99 a month and AI Ultra at $99.99. Users will still be able to pick low, medium, or high effort levels for whatever model they have; higher effort burns through usage caps faster.
The shift applies to the consumer Gemini app on web and mobile for personal accounts. It is a different product from the developer API. Google has already been metering Gemini with compute-based limits that refresh on a roughly five-hour cycle, plus weekly caps. The October 9 change does not invent rationing. It changes which brain the ration buys. Flash-Lite is faster and cheaper to serve. Pro is the model Google has been using as a public demonstration of quality. Plus, the $5 tier Google introduced as a middle rung, is being recast as a Flash plan.
The second-order squeeze is on the habit, not the hobbyist. Two years of free Pro access trained millions of people to treat a frontier-class chatbot as a default search box. Inference at that quality does not stay free once the traffic is real. Google is aligning Gemini with a classic freemium ladder just as rivals meter coding agents and enterprises sign nuclear contracts to keep the lights on. Anyone who wanted Pro as a public good is being told the public good is Flash-Lite. The $20 door is the new showroom.
