Alphabet has limited or reversed artificial intelligence image generation capabilities inside Google Earth after the feature produced outputs that violated internal content policies, marking another setback for the company's efforts to integrate generative AI across its consumer products.

The rollback, confirmed in late July 2026, affects an experimental feature that allowed users to generate AI-powered imagery within the mapping and exploration platform. Google did not specify the exact nature of the policy violations, but the decision follows a pattern of cautious retractions as the company grapples with the challenges of deploying large generative models at scale across services used by billions of people.

Google Earth, which combines satellite imagery, aerial photography, and geographic data, had begun testing the generative capabilities as part of a broader push to add interactive and customizable elements to the platform.
