Bitcoin Whales Accumulate Billions in July Despite ETF Outflows

Large Bitcoin holders have accumulated billions of dollars worth of the cryptocurrency in July, a trend that some analysts interpret as institutional confidence in the asset's long-term value even as spot exchange-traded funds have experienced intermittent outflows and macroeconomic uncertainty persists.

Data from blockchain analytics firms shows that addresses holding more than one thousand Bitcoin — commonly referred to as whales — added substantially to their positions throughout the month, with net inflows accelerating after the cryptocurrency dipped below $62,000 in mid-July. The buying activity has helped keep Bitcoin trading in a relatively narrow range between $60,000 and $65,000, even as equity markets experienced sharper volatility around the Federal Reserve's late-July meeting.

The accumulation pattern contrasts with flows into U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs, which have recorded mixed results in recent weeks. After a prolonged outflow streak that extended through much of June and early July, some ETFs posted modest inflows in the latter half of the month, though not enough to fully offset earlier redemptions. Analysts attribute the divergence to a shift in holder composition: long-term institutional and sovereign buyers are increasing direct custody, while shorter-term retail and hedge fund exposure is rotating through ETF vehicles.

"What we are seeing is a bifurcation of the market," said a strategist at a digital asset research firm. "The whales are playing a different game than the ETF traders. They are not chasing weekly momentum; they are positioning for a multi-year cycle."

Bitcoin's network fundamentals have also shifted. Mining difficulty dropped by roughly 10% in mid-July, the second-largest downward adjustment of the year, as unprofitable operators shut down machines in response to sub-$65,000 prices and rising energy costs. The hashrate decline was concentrated among smaller miners, while larger, vertically integrated operations maintained or expanded capacity.

Options markets are pricing in potential upside. Large call spreads targeting $72,000 by month-end were observed in the days leading up to the July 28-29 Fed meeting, suggesting that some traders were positioning for a relief rally if the central bank signaled a dovish tilt. The Fed's decision to hold rates steady provided a modest boost, though Bitcoin remained below its late-May highs near $70,000.

Macro headwinds remain significant. Treasury yields have climbed as markets price in a higher-for-longer rate environment, reducing the relative attractiveness of non-yielding assets like Bitcoin. Meanwhile, Ethereum and several major altcoins have underperformed, with ETH trading below $2,000 for extended periods — a level that has tested sentiment across the broader cryptocurrency complex.

Despite the near-term challenges, several institutional forecasters have maintained bullish long-term targets. Standard Chartered, which earlier declared the crypto winter over after Bitcoin held the $59,000 line, continues to project six-figure prices within the next eighteen to twenty-four months if ETF flows turn consistently positive and regulatory clarity improves in the United States.
