Vitalik Says Ethereum's Next Fork Is the Last One 2015 Would Recognize

Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin wrote over the weekend that Hegota, the 2027 upgrade after this year's Glamsterdam fork, is "likely to be Ethereum's last 'normal' fork" — the last one a 2015 developer would still recognize as a blockchain.

The essay, "The cryptographic world computer," published Saturday, argues the network is already a hybrid of Nakamoto consensus and academic cryptography that "did not even exist" in 2009, and is called a blockchain "to a large extent for historical reasons." What follows Hegota, in his telling, is recursive STARKs, automated formal verification, a heavily optimized proof-of-stake design, and a quantum-safe stack. Verification would move from re-executing every block to sampling data with PeerDAS and checking a SNARK. Finality would land in 8 to 32 seconds, against roughly 200 seconds for 12 confirmations today, with slots of 4 to 8 seconds.

Two Hegota features are already on the board: FOCIL, a fork-choice rule that forces the next block to include transactions from a validator committee's lists, and frame transactions that allow account-level custom validation, including quantum-resistant signatures. Privacy is split: general computation stays expensive and only partly private; special-purpose apps get stronger cover from zero-knowledge proofs. Gas, Buterin said, will punish inscrutable serial transactions and reward work that can be parallelized before it hits a block.

The political fight inside Ethereum has been about layer-2 networks siphoning fees from the base chain. Buterin's answer is to stop competing as a chain. If the settlement layer becomes a verification machine, the fee argument of 2026 is the wrong war. The second-order bet for ether holders is therefore not another throughput demo. It is whether recursive proofs and 8-second finality still need a scarce native asset, or whether "world computer" is a research program that outruns the token. Hegota is the last familiar fork. After that, the valuation has to follow the cryptography.
