Ethereum ETF Inflows Outpace Bitcoin as Institutional Money Tests the Layer-2 Trade

Ethereum-denominated exchange-traded products have begun to draw institutional inflows at a faster clip than Bitcoin ETFs during parts of the recent rally, a reversal that challenges the assumption that Bitcoin always leads institutional crypto appetite.

The shift has coincided with stronger relative price performance for Ether, which has outperformed Bitcoin on several metrics over the past month. Analysts say the rotation reflects growing interest in Ethereum's upcoming protocol upgrades, expanding staking markets, and the continued migration of decentralized finance activity onto Layer-2 networks that settle on the base chain.

Institutional investors have historically preferred Bitcoin for its relative simplicity as a store-of-value narrative, but Ethereum offers exposure to protocol revenue, staking yields, and network growth. As asset managers refine their crypto strategies, some are treating Ether as a more diversified bet on blockchain infrastructure rather than merely a competitor to Bitcoin.

The trend also arrives as ETF providers compete on product features. BlackRock and other issuers have added staking components or enhanced custody structures, making Ethereum-based products more attractive to wealth managers who previously avoided direct crypto exposure. Meanwhile, Bitcoin ETF flows have become more mixed, with some weeks showing outflows even as prices rallied.

What happens next may depend on whether Ethereum can maintain its technical momentum and whether the SEC clarifies its stance on staking rewards inside regulated funds. If those conditions hold, institutional allocation models may continue to treat Ether as a separate and growing sleeve within crypto portfolios rather than a secondary holding.
