The Dow Jones Industrial Average and S&P 500 surged to fresh record highs in mid-August, driven by a powerful rally in technology stocks and renewed optimism that cooling inflation will allow the Federal Reserve to maintain steady interest rates.

The S&P 500 closed at a record 7,798.99 on August 13, surpassing its previous peak with an intraday high approaching 7,815. The Dow Jones topped 54,000 for the first time, closing at 54,085.88 after a single-session gain of roughly 900 points.

Technology and semiconductor stocks led the advance, with Sandisk, Micron, Microsoft, and Meta posting strong gains. The rally extended beyond tech, as cooling producer and consumer price data eased concerns that the Federal Reserve would need to resume tightening.

The Nasdaq Composite also participated in the broad-based advance, though its gains were more modest relative to the Dow's historic surge. Analysts attributed the divergence to a rotation from growth-oriented technology shares into more cyclical sectors that had lagged earlier in the year.

Corporate earnings have supported the rally, with second-quarter profits surging 50.4% year-over-year—the strongest growth in nearly two decades. Technology companies in particular have demonstrated that massive AI infrastructure investments are translating into revenue growth.

The record highs mark a dramatic reversal from market anxiety earlier in the year, when fears of persistent inflation and geopolitical disruption had driven volatility higher. Investors now appear to be betting that a soft landing remains achievable.
