Federal agencies across the US government are working through the final days before the July 2, 2026 deadline to implement key provisions of Executive Order 14409 on AI innovation and security.

The Trump administration's AI security order directs multiple agencies to establish cybersecurity measures for AI systems, including a new AI cybersecurity clearinghouse to facilitate vulnerability sharing between government and industry partners.

CISA, in consultation with OMB and other agencies, has been issuing Binding Operational Directives to harden federal systems against AI-enabled threats. The Treasury Department is coordinating with NSA and CISA to create the clearinghouse, while OMB has identified grants for AI vulnerability detection research.

The order takes a notably different approach from the previous Biden-era EO 14110, emphasizing voluntary collaboration over mandatory regulation. Agencies have until August 1 to complete a classified benchmarking process for defining "covered frontier models" that could support a voluntary pre-release review framework.

Industry groups have welcomed the shift toward innovation-friendly policies, though some experts caution that the voluntary nature of the framework may result in uneven adoption across different sectors and organizations.
