Coinbase is enabling businesses on its platform to accept payments from artificial-intelligence agents, a step the exchange says will help build an onchain economy where autonomous software can hire services, purchase data, and complete transactions without human intervention.
The feature, rolling out this week to Coinbase Business users, leverages the x402 protocol developed and incubated by the exchange. The protocol allows AI agents to initiate payments on Coinbase's Base layer-2 network using stablecoins, creating a machine-to-machine payment layer that the company believes will become essential as agentic AI systems proliferate.
Coinbase executives framed the launch as a bridge between two of the technology industry's most closely watched trends: autonomous AI agents and blockchain-based finance. The exchange argued that existing payment infrastructure was built for humans and lacks the programmable, settlement-finality properties that machines require to transact at scale.
Early use cases are expected to include AI agents paying for API access, cloud computing resources, and curated data feeds. Coinbase said it is working with several software vendors to integrate x402 into their agent frameworks, though it declined to name specific partners.
The announcement comes as competition intensifies among crypto platforms to capture value from the emerging AI-agent economy. Rivals including Solana and Ethereum layer-2 networks have also explored agent-focused payment tools, but Coinbase's large business user base and regulatory licenses in major markets give it a distribution advantage.
