Bitcoin held just below $65,000 on Friday even as a rout in technology stocks erased roughly $800 billion in market value, suggesting that cryptocurrency markets are increasingly decoupling from traditional risk assets during periods of equity volatility.
The divergence was striking. The Magnificent Seven group of mega-cap technology companies suffered their worst single-day decline since April 2025 after Alphabet and Tesla reported earnings that spooked investors worried about the sustainability of artificial intelligence spending. Bitcoin, by contrast, fell less than 1 percent, and broader crypto markets showed relative resilience.
Analysts have long debated whether Bitcoin behaves more like a risk asset correlated with equities or a separate store of value akin to digital gold. The latest price action offers evidence for the latter view, at least in the current environment. Spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds, which had experienced weeks of outflows earlier in the summer, showed signs of stabilizing demand as institutional investors appeared to treat the cryptocurrency as a hedge against technology sector uncertainty.
The tech selloff was driven by concerns that capital expenditures on AI infrastructure are outpacing near-term revenue potential. Alphabet's capital spending rose sharply, while Tesla's automotive margins compressed, leading investors to question whether the AI trade has become overcrowded. Crypto markets, having already endured their own bear market earlier in the year, may have less speculative froth to shed.
Oil prices added another layer of complexity, with Brent crude surging toward $98 per barrel as tensions in the Middle East persisted. Rising energy costs typically pressure risk assets, yet Bitcoin's limited supply dynamics and decentralized structure appeared to insulate it from the inflationary concerns that weighed on equities.
Trading volume across major cryptocurrency exchanges remained elevated but orderly, with derivatives markets showing no signs of the leverage-driven liquidations that have characterized previous downturns. For Bitcoin bulls, the session represented a test of the cryptocurrency's maturation as an asset class, one that it arguably passed by avoiding the contagion that swept through technology stocks.
